LiquidPlanner- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:
Commercial

Technology:

Description:
After reading a review in eWeek about LiquidPlanner, I decided to take a look myself. First glance, it looks like a typical PM tool with some Web 2.0 built in, THEN I started to enter a test project and tasks...which provided an interesting approach I haven't seen implemented elsewhere, it provides a range of delivery dates (task x could take 10-15 days). Interesting concept and great potential for a real PM approach. I'm assuming some logic is built in for probability, risks, etc.......it's in beta and looking GOOD!

IT Project Guide - Risk Management- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:
Open Source

Technology:
php and MySQL

Description:
After spending some time with dotProject/web2Project and rewritting it to become IT Project Guide - PM (Project Management), I realized that there were some very base coding limitations and an overall approach to the web app that - at best - would make a limited product. SO, the decision was to dig-in and continue the clean up OR rewrite. I took the opportunity to learn PHP framework CodeIgniter, really learn jQuery and really get into ajax...this product is the result

Rally Software Development- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:
Commercial

Technology:

Description:

If you're looking for an Agile development management tool - this is a good one. The interface is clean, easy to use, modern, etc. The basic Agile story theme approach is clearly implemented and for anyone with any Agile knowledge easy to follow. The issues I see are:

  • does not provide the PM with tools needed for the initiation, control or close out phases
  • might be difficult to utilize in a multi-project environment (no roll up to projects/clients/etc)
  • story info seems shallow - I'm in favor of a more Volere type of story: http://www.systemsguild.com/GuildSite/Robs/Template.html#volereaa
Overall, I think it fits a need, but not a complete system and could easily be out grown.

Planning Force- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:
Commercial

Technology:
Desktop

Description:
Planning force is basically a clean, easy to use version of MS Project. The focus appears to be on resource management and financial planning/tracking. Some nice features include base templates, useful help and some ability to update through the gannt chart. This is a desktop application, so there is no real-time collaboration or even posting information to a website.

Thoughtworks - Mingle- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:

Technology:

Description:

From their write up: Mingle is an agile project management and collaboration tool for software teams.

Presented as an Agile PM tool, but it follows the same PMBOK approach with differing terminology (Stories, tasks, etc.). There are elements and hints of an easy to use graphical approach to presentation and updates, but overall a difficult tool to understand and use. Easy to get lost in.....

Action Method- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:
Commercial

Technology:

Description:
A very simple, but clean, task and forum web based system. This tool is being promoted as a non-technical/non-software development PM tool - aka very light feature set. Overall easy to use, basically saving simple tasks and settnig up forums for discussions. To simple for non-development work and probably a little to confusion for the general public.

dotProject- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:
Open Source

Technology:
PHP/MySQL

Description:
Looking for an Open Source (aka free) PM tool? dotProject seems to be it. Overall, it's a very solid, but standard, PM tool. It contains all of the basics and then some (but not much more). The structure provides for company level project control and includes ticket (issue) management. You can also plug in some add-on modules, but not many are available.

Design Works- (click for detail)

MS Project- (click for detail)

PHP Project Management- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:
Open Source

Technology:
PHP/MySQL (php v4)

Description:
An open source PM tool that has not been updated for some time. I spent a night getting it running - not worth the effort, especially since the results were all in Russian...interesting, but not worth the time. If you intend to use it, be prepared to spend time upgrading the code to be php v5 compliant

Viewpath- (click for detail)

Usability:
Features:
Collaboration:

Type:
Commercial

Technology:

Description:
The only real interesting aspect of this tool is that it seems to be written using Microsoft's Silverlight...but I could be wrong. A simple task management system, MS Project with a cleaner interface and less of the unused tools. Not much better then a spreadsheet.
